is it supported? I JUST got it and have not opened the box so I can take
it back if it will not work...
I am new to this Linux on my computer so thanks for any
recommendations...

Probably your distro (you didn't say which one) doesn't have the ppd
for it yet. have you tried the linuxprinting.org site?

You should get the ppd found there:

http://www.openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=hpijs&printer=HP-PhotoSmart_C4200&show=0

Which should support your model. Drop it into your ppd directory
(probably /usr/share/ppd/openprinting/HP or something like it) and
then try to add the printer
